Open the cockpit

Log in and open Meta Ads Manager for the Acme ad account.

  1. 1Click 'Open Ads Manager' above and log in with the account that has access to your business.
  2. 2Top-left of Ads Manager, click the account dropdown and confirm the Acme ad account is selected (not a personal one).
  3. 3You should now see three tabs: Campaigns · Ad sets · Ads. This is home base.

Ads Manager is the control panel for everything. Everything you build lives in a strict hierarchy: Campaign (the goal) → Ad Set (the audience + budget + optimization) → Ad (the creative). Getting comfortable with those three tabs is 80% of never feeling lost. If you ever feel confused, ask yourself 'which of the three levels am I on?' and it snaps back into place.

First, the missing piece: your Lead event

Before any ads, make sure a Meta Pixel exists and can fire a 'Lead' event on your site. Open Events Manager to check.

  • A Pixel (dataset) exists

In Events Manager you should see a Pixel. Its ID (000000000000000) must match the one in this template's config.

  • The Pixel base code is on your site

It should load on every page of acme.com.

  • A 'Lead' standard event is defined

This is the specific action = a conversion. You'll create/confirm it on the next slide if it's missing.

A 'conversion event' is just Meta's name for 'the moment someone becomes valuable to you' — a form submit, a purchase, a booking. The Pixel is a small snippet on your website that watches for that moment and reports it back to Meta. The Sales objective you'll pick optimizes toward this 'Lead' event, so if it doesn't exist or doesn't fire, Meta is optimizing toward nothing and the budget is wasted. This is the single most-skipped step by beginners — nail it and you're ahead of most people running ads.

Create the Lead event (no code needed)

In Events Manager, use the Event Setup Tool to point-and-click your 'Lead' event onto the right button or page — no developer required.

  1. 1Click the link above to open your Pixel's settings in Events Manager.
  2. 2Click 'Add events' → 'From the Pixel' → 'Open Event Setup Tool'.
  3. 3Enter your website URL (https://acme.com/get-started) and click Open Website. Your site opens with a Meta overlay.
  4. 4To track a button (e.g. 'Submit', 'Buy', 'Book'): click 'Track New Button', click the actual button on your page, then choose the standard event 'Lead'.
  5. 5To track a page load instead (e.g. a 'thank you' page): choose 'Track a URL', paste the post-conversion URL, and map it to 'Lead'.
  6. 6Click Finish Setup, then Confirm. The event is now live.
Website URL to open in the tool
https://acme.com/get-started
Standard event to select
Lead

Pick the STANDARD event named 'Lead' — not a random custom event. Only standard events (Lead, Purchase, CompleteRegistration, etc.) can be selected as your optimization event in the campaign. If you sell products, you'd usually use 'Purchase'; for a form/booking, use 'Lead'.

The Event Setup Tool is Meta's no-code way to attach a conversion event to a click or a page view. It's perfect for someone who 'never ran ads' and doesn't want to touch code. Behind the scenes it's doing the same thing a developer would hard-code, just visually. If your site is on Shopify or another platform with a native Meta integration, the Lead event may already exist — in that case this slide is just a confirmation, not new work.

Prove the Lead event actually fires

Use Test Events to watch your 'Lead' event fire in real time before you spend a dollar.

  1. 1Open Test Events (link above) and paste your website URL into 'Test browser events', then Open Website.
  2. 2Complete the real action on your site (submit the form / finish a test purchase / book).
  3. 3Switch back to the Test Events tab — you should see a 'Lead' event appear within seconds.
  4. 4Optional but recommended: install the Pixel Helper extension and reload your page — it lists every event firing, so you can spot duplicates or a missing event.

Do not launch until you SEE the 'Lead' event register here. 'I installed the Pixel' is not the same as 'the event fires.' This 5-minute check is the difference between a campaign that learns and one that quietly burns money.

Verifying beats assuming. Test Events gives you live confirmation that when a real person does the thing, Meta receives the 'Lead' signal — which is exactly what the algorithm needs to find more people like them. Common gotchas it catches: the event mapped to the wrong button, the event firing on every page (not just the conversion), or the Pixel not loading at all. Catch it now, not after wasting $50/day.

The 5-point pre-flight check

Confirm these 5 things exist before you build anything. Miss one and the campaign can't optimize.

  • Active ad account + payment method

Billing → confirm a card is added and the account isn't restricted.

  • Facebook Page connected

Acme Page — your ads run 'from' this identity.

  • Instagram account linked

@acme — linked in the Page's settings so ads show on IG too.

  • Meta Pixel 000000000000000 shows 'Active'

Events Manager → your Pixel (ID 000000000000000) shows a green 'Active' dot.

  • A 'Lead' event firing on conversion

When someone completes your action on https://acme.com/get-started, the Pixel fires a standard 'Lead' event. This is the signal Meta optimizes toward. Test it with the Meta Pixel Helper browser extension.

If the Lead event isn't firing yet, stop here and get it fixed first. Optimizing toward an event that doesn't exist means Meta is flying blind and will waste the budget. Use the Meta Pixel Helper extension to confirm 'Lead' fires after someone completes your action.

Meta's AI only gets smart when you feed it a clear 'win' signal. That win is the Lead event. The Pixel is the little piece of code on your site that watches for it and reports back 'hey, that click converted.' Without it, you're paying for clicks and hoping — with it, Meta actively hunts for more people like the ones who converted. This single step is the difference between a campaign that improves over time and one that just burns money.

The naming system (your future sanity)

Use this exact naming structure at every level. Copy the templates now — you'll paste them as you go.

Campaign name
ACME_CONV_SALES-CBO_$50_2026-07
Ad set name
ACME_CONV_ADV-BROAD_US_18plus_LEAD
Ad name pattern
ACME__AD01__variation-a

Names are how you read reports at a glance without opening anything. The pattern is Brand_Funnel_Strategy_Budget_Date at the campaign level, then Brand_Funnel_Audience_Geo_Age_Event at the ad set, and Brand__AD##__label for each ad. When you scale to several campaigns you'll thank yourself — you'll instantly see which creative and which audience won straight from the names.

Create + pick the objective

Start a new campaign and choose the Sales objective.

  1. 1On the Campaigns tab, click the green + Create button.
  2. 2In the objective list, choose Sales. (Not Leads, not Traffic.)
  3. 3Click Continue.
  4. 4If asked 'Manual sales campaign' vs 'Advantage+ sales campaign', choose Manual sales campaign so you keep control of the audience and optimization.

The objective tells Meta what a 'win' looks like. Sales (optimizing for the Lead event on your site) points the algorithm at people likely to actually convert — real intent — not just cheap clicks. The Leads objective is for on-Facebook instant forms; since we're sending people to your own website with a Pixel, Sales is the correct, higher-intent choice.

Name the campaign

Paste the campaign name into the Campaign name field.

Paste into 'Campaign name'
ACME_CONV_SALES-CBO_$50_2026-07

Doing this now (instead of leaving the default 'New Sales Campaign') means you never end up with a graveyard of 'Copy of Copy of New Campaign'. The date stamp (2026-07) lets you compare this month's test against next month's cleanly.

Turn on Advantage Campaign Budget

Enable the campaign budget toggle and set it to $50/day.

  1. 1Find the Advantage campaign budget toggle (also called CBO) and switch it ON.
  2. 2Set Budget type = Daily.
  3. 3Enter 50 (USD) as the daily amount.
  4. 4Leave the bid strategy on the default 'Highest volume'.
  5. 5Leave the A/B test toggle OFF. Click Next.
Daily budget
50

CBO means you hold the budget at the campaign level and let Meta pour it into whichever ad is performing best in real time, instead of you guessing. $50/day is a solid starting point for a conversion campaign: enough daily conversions to escape the 'learning phase' within roughly a week, but not so much that you overspend before you have data. Bigger isn't better early — data is.

Send them to your website

Set the conversion location to Website and pick your Pixel + Lead event.

  1. 1At the top of the ad set, set Conversion location = Website.
  2. 2Performance goal = Maximize number of conversions.
  3. 3Pixel = select your Acme Pixel (ID 000000000000000).
  4. 4Conversion event = Lead.

This is where you tell Meta exactly what to optimize for. 'Maximize conversions' + the Lead event = 'go find me the most conversions you can for $50/day.' Because the budget is already set at the campaign level, you won't see a budget field here — that's correct, not a bug.

Let Meta find the buyers (Advantage+ broad)

Use the Advantage+ audience and only set light controls: location and age.

  1. 1In the Audience section, keep Advantage+ audience selected (the default).
  2. 2Under Audience controls, set Location = United States.
  3. 3Set Age minimum = 18 (leave max open / 65+).
  4. 4Leave detailed interests EMPTY — do not add interest keywords.
  5. 5Leave languages empty unless you only want one language.

In 2026, with strong creative, broad beats hand-picked interests almost every time. Your ad copy self-selects the right person better than any interest checkbox. Advantage+ then uses your conversion event to learn who actually converts and floods delivery toward them. The controls (location, age) are just guardrails so you don't pay to reach the wrong people — not targeting.

12 / 23

Use all placements (Advantage+)

Keep Advantage+ placements ON so Meta uses Feed, Reels, Stories, and more.

  1. 1In Placements, keep Advantage+ placements selected (recommended).
  2. 2Do NOT switch to Manual placements.
  3. 3Click Next to move to the Ad level.

This is exactly why creatives come in different shapes (square/portrait for Feed, 9x16 for Reels/Stories). Advantage+ placements let Meta drop the right aspect ratio into the right spot and find the cheapest conversions across all of them. Restricting placements manually usually just raises your cost per result.

Name the ad set

Paste the ad set name into the Ad set name field.

Paste into 'Ad set name'
ACME_CONV_ADV-BROAD_US_18plus_LEAD

One clean ad set for a single broad audience is the right call here. You're not splitting audiences yet — you're testing which CREATIVE wins first. The name encodes the audience (ADV-BROAD), geo, age, and optimization event so it reads like a sentence.

Set up the ad shell

Confirm the ad posts from the right identity, then get ready to build 3 ads.

  1. 1You're now at the Ad level (3rd column). You'll build 3 ads inside this one ad set.
  2. 2Identity → Facebook Page = Acme. Instagram account = @acme.
  3. 3Ad setup = Manual upload. Format = Single image or video.
  4. 4The next 3 slides each give you EVERYTHING for one ad. Build the first one fully, then duplicate it 2 times.

The identity is the face of the ad — the Page/IG account it appears to come from. Using your real accounts builds the page's social proof (likes, comments, shares accumulate on the real brand). 'Manual upload / Single image' keeps things simple and predictable. You build ONE ad completely, then duplicate — so you only fill the shared settings once.

3 ads is a healthy starting spread: enough variety for Meta to find a winner, few enough that each still gets real spend inside a $50/day budget (spread across 10+ ads, none get a fair test). We keep the COPY identical across all of them and only change the CREATIVE — because changing one thing at a time is the only way to know what actually won. Once one wins, that's when you test new angles with that winner.

This is your master ad — build it carefully once, because the other 2 are just duplicates with the image, name, and tracking tag swapped. Upload the feed image as the main asset, then use 'Edit per placement' to drop the 9x16 into Stories/Reels so the vertical spots get a full-screen creative instead of a cropped one. The utm_content (ad01_variation-a) is what lets you later say 'Variation A produced X results' in your own analytics.

You only touch the name (so reports read clean), the image (the actual variable), and utm_content (so this ad's results are traceable to 'Variation B'). Always duplicate from the SAME master (AD01), never from a previous duplicate, so a stray edit can't quietly carry forward.

Last check before you publish the ads

Confirm all 3 ads exist, then tame the Advantage+ creative enhancements.

  1. 1Count your ads: you should see all 3 (AD01, AD02, AD03) in the same ad set.
  2. 2On each ad, find 'Advantage+ creative' enhancements.
  3. 3Turn OFF: text overlays, image/music enhancements, and any cropping.
  4. 4It's fine to leave 'brightness/contrast' style visual touch-ups on if you want, but off is safest.

Advantage+ creative enhancements can nudge performance, but the aggressive ones (auto-added text, music, cropping) will wreck a carefully designed creative — cropping can chop your headline, and auto-text fights your baked-in copy. You spent real effort on these designs; protect them. Once you're comfortable, you can test enhancements ON as its own experiment later.

Launch

Review + publish

Do a final scan, then hit Publish. Green means go.

  1. 1Top-right, click Publish. Meta reviews ads (usually minutes to a few hours).
  2. 2Watch the Delivery column: 'In review' → 'Active' means it's live.
  3. 3If an ad is 'Rejected', open it, read the reason, fix the copy/claim, and resubmit.

Getting flagged once is normal, not a crisis. The review bot is strict, especially about claims. If rejected, the fix is almost always in the wording: remove anything that sounds like a guarantee or a sensitive claim and resubmit. Keep the language clear and honest.

First 72 hours
21 / 23

Don't touch it (the learning phase)

Leave the campaign completely alone for 3–4 days or ~50 conversions. Resist every urge to tweak.

  • Do NOT edit budget, audience, or creative

Every meaningful edit restarts the learning phase and wastes spend.

  • Do NOT panic on day 1 pricing

Cost per result is always ugliest early, then settles.

  • Wait for ~50 Lead events in the ad set

That's roughly when Meta 'exits learning' and delivery stabilizes.

When a campaign launches, Meta is actively experimenting to figure out who converts — that's the learning phase, and results are volatile and expensive during it. Every time you edit something important, you reset that clock and throw away what it learned. The hardest, most valuable ad-management skill is patience: build it right, then let the machine cook.

Reading results
22 / 23

The only 5 numbers to watch

After 3 days, add these columns and read them in this order.

  • Cost per result

Your north star. Is a lead cheaper than what it's worth to your business?

  • CTR (link click-through rate)

Under ~0.8% = the creative isn't stopping the scroll. Over ~1.5% = strong.

  • Landing page views → conversions

Lots of clicks but few conversions = the landing page or offer is the problem, not the ad.

  • Frequency

Keep it under ~2 early. High frequency fast = audience too small / fatigue.

  • Amount spent per ad

Give each ad ~$150 (or 3 days) before you judge it. Less = not enough data.

Read them top-down like a diagnosis. Cost per result tells you IF it's working; the others tell you WHY. High cost + low CTR = it's the creative (test a new hook). High cost + good CTR but few conversions = it's the landing page (the ad did its job, the page didn't). Separating 'ad problem' from 'page problem' is the skill that makes you dangerous — most people blame the ad when the page is the leak.

Optimize
23 / 23

Simple kill & scale rules

Follow these mechanical rules so you're not making emotional decisions.

  • KILL an ad

After ~$150 / 3 days: CTR under 0.8% AND cost per result over 2× your target → turn it off.

  • KEEP + let it run

Cost per result at or below target → leave it alone and keep feeding it.

  • SCALE the winner

Raise the CAMPAIGN budget by max +20% every 2–3 days. Slow and steady.

  • REFRESH creative

When frequency climbs past ~2.5–3 and cost per result rises, load a new creative/angle.

Never jump the budget from $50 to $150 overnight — big jumps re-trigger the learning phase and torch performance. +20% steps let Meta keep its learnings.

Rules beat feelings. The reason most people lose money on ads isn't strategy — it's fiddling: killing winners too early, scaling too fast, changing three things at once so they can't tell what worked. Decide the rules while you're calm (now), then just execute them. When a creative wins, that's when you test a new angle on that winner — that's your next campaign.
